The Cruel Prince Book Review

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

So I just finished reading The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. To be honest it was ok, I had previously heard a bit of the hype going around but never read anything about it.

To start it was a good book. I loved the writing and characters. The writing was pretty good, it was easy to read and follow. There were a couple of points throughout the book where I felt that the sentances weren't making sense ( in mt mind) but that was probably just me. The characters were also pretty good, I like the relationships and conflict between them it made me want to read and never stop.

The problem I have with the characters is their characterisation, there wasn't much of it.  I felt as if I was in a way suppose to already know the characters, they were described well and everything but there wasn't much described them as a character such as their backstory, attitudes, emotions etc. This made it hard for me to follow along with the book and the characters. What I did like about them though was the relationships, there was a lot of conflict and 'arguing' which I loved, I also like how the characters changed, it made the book more exciting and intreiging.

Another thing that confused me a bit was the lack of descriptiveness used to describe the 'faerie world'. I have never read a novel that was set in a fairy world so I had no idea what to expect. As I was reading I had no idea what I was suppose to be invisioning, I have no memory of reading a general setting of the 'faerie world' or anything it contained, this made it hard to follow along with where the story was. The book does contain a map of the world but when I was reading and places such as the Palace of Elfhame and Hollow Hall were mentioned I was taken to a place that seemed to be like a castle, giant houses with heaps of rooms, ballrooms, all the aspects rhat you think when you think palace or castle. But on the map the Hollow Hall is the size of a normal house and the Palace is under a tree ( I think ) so you can't picture anything from the map. This confused me a bit, along with the basic setting description, a lot of the time I was confused as to what I was suppose to be imagining in my head, this made it hard to truely imagine the world.

In conclusion the book was good, I enjoyed it but it didn't have nearly as much detail as I expected it to have, in addition to that the story line was a bit weird but I couldn't put into words how to describe it so mainly left it out of this review. It was a good fantasy book and I loved the romance and relationships.

Score: 5.5/10
